Join Us for Scrapbook Sunday

I Scrap Dead People, the title of the most recent podcast in Paperclipping Roundtable series is what caught my attention. The episode featured Ana Cabrera of FamilySearch.org and Jessica Sprague of JessicaSprague.com. They focused on finding ways to combine genealogy and family history research with scrapbooking to make our findings accessible for our family members and for our descendants. FamilySearch will be launching new family history and scrapbooking campaigns in the coming weeks and Jessica Sprague has a neat digital scrapbooking kit, Family History Album Class 1, to assist us with putting all of our hard work into an attractive format that will be cherished (we can only hope) for years to come.

Well, my friends, I have been wanting to take this class for quite a while. I have taken a class from Jessica before and it was top notch with clear instructions. Then I started wondering if other people have been thinking about doing something like this too. So, I started asking around on Twitter and lo and behold I got some takers. Now I am wondering if you might like to participate as well.

First go take a look at the Family History Album Class 1 and then I will tell you my plan.

Here is the plan; we sign up for the class, do a piece each week and post our results on Sundays, under the theme Scrapbook Sunday. If we have enough geneabloggers we can ask Thomas to list our theme under his Daily Blogging Prompts in the daily Genealogy Blogging Beat

What do you think? Interested? I saved the best part for last. Jessica Sprague got wind that a group of us were thinking about doing this and she has offered us a twenty percent discount! Just use the coupon code: FHA385 at checkout. That brings the cost down to just $36. That's a great deal.

Leave a comment below if you would like to join this family history scrapbooking adventure or if you have any questions. Everyone is welcome.

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I'm giving it some thought. Do you know if other's are signing up?

  2. There is an amazing amount of interest. It will be fun to complete this family history project with a group of people who are into both genealogy and scrapbook. It would be perfect if you all lived around the corner from me up here in New Hampshire and we could get together, eat m & m's and scrap, but since you don't we'll create our own virtual sewing, I mean scrapping, circle instead. I hope you decide to join us.

  3. I'm so glad that you mentioned it this morning. I'm in! It comes as a perfect time, too... the great scanfest this weekend will be specifically focused around this project.

  4. Oh, neat. I didn't realize that. If anyone is interested in scanfest over at AnceStories, here is the link: http://ancestories1.blogspot.com/search/label/Scanfest. What a great idea to concentrate on those pictures this weekend. Thanks Stephanie.

  5. Do you know if it starts on a certain date? Or you just sign up and have access for two weeks to the class materials?

  6. Hi Jackie,

Thank you for asking these questions, as probably others have the same ones.

There is no start date or end date. Once you purchase the class you will always have it in your account and can revisit it at anytime by going to the My Classes tab. The plan is to spread it out further than the two week period. Most of us are busy multitasking women and that will make it easier.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  7. I signed up and am looking forward to it. Will their be a blogging schedule of some type, or just blog whatever us done on Sunday?

  8. There is a lot to do in the class on the first couple of days and it would probably be better if we spread it out. On Sunday, I will post a schedule for us, but everyone should feel free to blog 'where they are'.

Jackie, I am so excited that you decided to sign up. There are six of us so far and a few more have expressed interest.

If everyone who is going to participate would send me a link to your blog, I will put the links together under a special tab.

Also, I would like us to get together for a real time chat, so please let me know if you are on Twitter or Google+.

Email me at jshoer [at] jenalygen [dot] com.

    Can't wait to get started.

  11. We haven't started yet Jenna. Hope you can do it! I know how busy you are.

I am going to post a schedule tomorrow. Right now everyone is buying the class and checking their software.

For those who might need new software, a fully functional trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements is available here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=en_us

  12. I'm considering this, Jen. Love the idea of it, but I've never used Photoshop Elements before, so I may not be up to speed with the rest of you. I'm glad to hear you'll be spacing it out. The idea of a virtual scrapping circle sounds fun!

  13. My blog is at http://jackiesgenealogy.blogspot.com

I have Facebook. Twitter and Google+ Accounts. Google Hangouts might be good for a chat though.

Shelly, I'm quite rusty with my Photoshop Elements. That's one reason I'm excited about this. I scrapbook paper and digital, but have lost my enthusiasm lately. This should help me get going again. I haven't been blogging as much as I've meant to either, so there is a dual benefit. I used to have some tutorials bookmarked. I'll see if I can find them.

  14. Shelley,

Photoshop Elements can have a big learning curve, but the class comes with templates that will make the whole process a lot easier. Plus, I was reading that you can get for free a Jessica Sprague Mentor, who will give you one on one help. Plus, you can ask questions here as well.

As Jackie said, there are lots of tutorials out there on the 'web'. Plus, there are tutorials right on Jessica Sprague as well.

I suggest you download the free trial version and play around with it as soon as you can.

  15. I just signed up for the class and will be joining--but behind by using your blogs. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Great! Bounced over from Desperately Seeking Surnames!
